Research Center for Structural Materials (RCSM) is the largest organization in Japan and one of the largest internationally for structural materials research. Formerly RCSM established in 2014, the 5th long-term plan starting April 2023 aims to build averting natural disasters and achieve carbon neutrality based on the two approaches of "material creation" and "material evaluation." In the creation project, we aim to develop materials that can withstand extreme environments such as cryogenic temperatures, ultra-high temperatures, and huge earthquakes. In the evaluation project, we work on developing technologies such as quantitative prediction using multi-scale measurement and computational science to fundamentally elucidate the mechanism of property expression.
We aspire for a "basic research institute for industry" and actively promote collaboration between industry, academia, and government. We will open up the world's most advanced research facilities and have a diverse range of experts work to provide comprehensive solutions to all material issues. We actively accept young researchers, graduate students, and students from companies, universities, and technical colleges, and actively develop human resources including recurrent education. Furthermore, we will further promote material specifications and standardization as well as accident investigations that only public institutions can do, contributing to the reduction of social infrastructure disasters that are directly linked to human lives. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in the activities of NIMS Research Center for Structural Materials.
