Strategies for Tailoring Microstructure and Properties of High Entropy Alloys
Prof. Pinaki Prasad Bhattacharjee (IIT Hyderabad)

Abstract:
High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) were originally considered multicomponent alloys with equiatomic or near-equiatomic compositions [1]. Notwithstanding the apparent compositional complexities, many HEAs showed the formation of solid-solution phases attributed to their large configurational entropy [1]. Subsequently, the scope of HEAs was expanded to explore the massive composition space for developing compositionally complex alloys (CCAs) with novel mechanical properties [2, 3].
The properties of HEAs can be further engineered by microstructural tailoring using thermo-mechanical processing strategies. To this effect, we have explored the possibilities of tailoring microstructures and mechanical properties of different classes of HEAs, including single-phase FCC equiatomic HEAs, lamellar (L12+B2) eutectic HEAs (EHEAs), and novel intermetallic-containing HEAs. We have demonstrated that innovative thermomechanical processing strategies can lead to novel heterogeneous micro/nanostructures with outstanding mechanical properties. The talk is intended to highlight these developments and the prospects of developing HEAs as advanced structural materials.
